New Models Paint a Diverse Automotive Future

The Los Angeles Auto Show (LAAS) for years has been the “green” auto show with most of the vehicle debuts electrified in some fashion. It could be mild hybrid, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery electric or hydrogen-fueled electric. The 2024 LAAS had a mix of these, but also numerous vehicles powered by a more traditional internal combustion engine (ICE). This is noteworthy as it recognizes not everyone is ready for an electrified car, truck or SUV, and that gasoline engines are becoming more efficient and still have a place on the country’s roads and in people’s driveways.

While there were several “announcements” of vehicles promised to come out sometime in 2026 and beyond, we will stick with what we saw at this year’s LAAS that will be on-sale sometime in 2025. Make sure to check out the photo gallery at the end of the story.

In alphabetical order:

2025 Acura ADX

This all-new premium compact SUV is the entry model to the Acura line-up, offering “young buyers” the opportunity to get into the performance side of Honda for less than they could in recent years. Available in three trims—ADX, ADX A-Spec and ADX A-Spec with Advance, even the base ADX will deliver plenty of performance and handling prowess before stepping-up to the A-Spec line. Standard engine will be a turbocharged 1.5-liter VTEC four.

Final pricing will be announced close to the on-sale date, but is estimated being in the mid-$30,000 range. Deliveries to your local Acura dealer will be in early 2025.

2025 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1

If you live for the sound of a rumbling, crackling exhaust and the smell of gasoline and burning rubber, then the 2025 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is for you. This high-performance, mid-engine, rear-wheel drive, 2-passenger, 2-door targa or convertible sports car, which features a carbon-fiber aero package, is powered by a 5.5-liter flat-plank crankshaft V8 producing 1,064 horsepower (hp) and 828 pound-feet (lb.-ft.) of torque. Make sure to hang on to something when tromping the accelerator pedal as the 8-speed automatic will do the quarter mile in under 10 seconds, can hit 233 miles per hour, and go 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds.

Final pricing will be announced closer to when the ZR1 goes on-sale in mid-2025.

2025 Chrysler Pacifica FAV

Before you pop a vein, FAV translates in Chrysler speak to Family Adventure Vehicle. Take the popular Chrysler Pacifica minivan and load it with black 18-inch wheels, all-weather floor mats, a Thule rooftop cargo carrier and some design cues from the Chrysler Halcyon Concept EV (see below in the Concept section). Families on the go now have a seriously roomy and capable vehicle in which to get away. Clean Fleet Report last reviewed the Pacifica plug-in hybrid in 2022 and were big fans. Upgrades and improvements since then, plus the FAV package, should make the Pacifica even better.

Pricing has not been announced but is expected to be in dealers in early 2025.

2025 Fiat 500e EV Giorgio Armani Collector’s Edition

Fiat reintroduced the Cinquecento, or 500e, in the United States in 2024. The five-year hiatus since the original 2019 model allowed Fiat to refine the 500e. At the time Fiat announced several Special Editions were coming with the most recent being the 500e EV Giorgio Armani Collector’s Edition that was introduced last week in Los Angeles. Available in two colors—Dark Green and custom shade created by Armani that combines gray and beige, Ceramic Greige, it has a matching tone-on-tone eco-leather interior.

Pricing starts at $38,000 when it arrives in early 2025.

2026 Genesis Gasoline and Electrified GV70

The updated 2026 GV70 gasoline and electrified GV70 will remain as top sellers among premium midsize SUVs. The refinement and power plant options continue to make these Genesis models must-be-considered when looking at their pricier competition. This is the story we wrote after seeing them at a private event two days before the 2024 LAAS.

2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9

Hyundai made a big splash at the LAAS with the introduction of its first all-electric seven-passenger SUV. This sharp-looking SUV EV will feature second-row seats that swivel when the Ioniq 9 is not in motion, fast charging (10-to-80% in 24 minutes using a 350 kW charger), Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, 0-60 mph in the Performance model of 5.2 seconds, 16 exterior colors and 19, 20 and 21-inch wheel options.

Pricing has not been announced, but the Ioniq 9 is scheduled to be in dealers in the first half of 2025.

2025 Kia EV6

The popular EV6 retains its self-identifying look, but has evolved and been refined for a sportier edge. Changes include new head and tail lights, front and rear bumpers and newly designed 19-21-inch wheels. The biggest changes for 2025 are the available 84.0 kWh battery that in the rear-wheel drive Light LR, Wind, GT-Line trims is targeted to have a 319 all-electric driving range. The EV6 line, excluding the EV6 GT, will now all be built in West Point, Georgia.

Pricing will be announced close to when it goes on-sale in the first half of 2025.

• 2026 Kia EV9 GT

Since Kia introduced the 2024 EV9, the automotive media has raved about it and, based on the sales, so has the driving public. As if they can’t help themselves, Kia is taking the EV9 performance (remember what they did with the EV6 GT) up a few notches with the 2026 EV9 GT.

This three-row, six-passenger all-electric SUV has e-AWD with a 160 kW motor up-front and 270 kW motor in the rear. The combined 501 horsepower is a 122 horsepower increase that will deliver estimated 0-60 mph times of under 4.3 seconds. Add-in the driver-selectable electronically controlled suspension and the driver-selectable drive modes that adjust the shock damping, steering and brake feel, the EV9 GT should be one of the fastest ways to get the kids to school.

Pricing will be announced close to when it goes on-sale in the latter half of 2025.

2025 Kia Seltos

First launched in 2021, Kia did a major refresh of its compact utility vehicle in 2024. Now the 2025 Seltos gets further refinements to the digital gauges, a new power sunroof, 17-inch wheels standard on the base S trim, and updated interior materials and finishes.

The 2025 Seltos is available with two gasoline powertrains—a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 146 hp, and a 1.6-liter turbo 4-cylinder engine producing 195 hp. No mention of a hybrid or plug-in hybrid model coming anytime soon.

Pricing, excluding the destination and handling fee, ranges from $25,090 to $31,090. The 2025 Seltos is in dealers now.

2026 Kia Sportage

Kia’s top-selling model has been extensively updated with design, technology and convenience features. While still considered the fifth generation model, the upgrades almost give an all-new feel.

The three propulsion options of gasoline, hybrid and plug-in hybrid, are offered across several trims designed for everything from commuting and around town driving to those who want to be more adventurous and get a bit dirty in sand, mud and snow. Each power plant delivers very good-to-great fuel economy, so there should be one trim best fitting every driving needs and lifestyle.

Clean Fleet Report last reviewed the 2023 Sportage Hybrid and became big fans of this compact crossover. Pricing will be announced closer to when the 2026 Sportage is in dealers in mid-2025.

Honda Passport and Passport TrailSport

The 2026 Honda Passport has a new design “expressing its adventure-ready character” with the Passport TrailSport the most off-road capable Honda SUV ever. With increased ground clearance, off-road-tuned suspension, steel skid plates, specially developed AT (all-terrain) tires and, what every off-road adventurer needs—bright orange recovery hooks. Honda is hoping owners will test its rugged capabilities, not just buy it as an aspirational vehicle. The Passport TrailSport is designed and built to be tested in something more demanding than the freeway or grocery store parking lot.

All 2026 Passports have the new 285 hp 3.5-liter V6 engine, paired with the model’s first 10-speed automatic transmission that has been tuned exclusively for Passport. Adding to Passport’s off-road cred is the Honda torque vectoring i-VTM4 all-wheel drive system that optimizes traction in all driving scenarios, especially slick and off-road conditions.

Interior occupants are treated to the new Passport’s improved rear seat legroom, increased cargo space and more standard tech than on previous Passport models. This includes a 10.2-inch digital driver instrumentation display, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, Google built-in, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto all standard.

The fourth generation Passport will come in three trims—RTL, TrailSport and TrailSport Elite with the base price starting in the mid-$40,000s. Final pricing will be announced closer to when the 2026 Passport is in dealers sometime in early 2025.

2025 Volkswagen Tiguan 4Motion

Volkswagen pulled the sheet on the all-new 2025 Tiguan two-row midsize SUV the night before the LAAS Media Day. Journalists were invited to get up-close to the brand’s best-selling model in North America. What they showed revealed a refined exterior, upgraded interior, more power and better fuel economy. Typical for Volkswagen, everything of the all-new Tiguan is an evolution and tasteful, nothing radical that would scare away Tiguan owners from upgrading to the new model.

Powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, the 201 horsepower is up from the previous 184. There was no announcement but a hybrid Tiguan wouldn’t surprise anyone, opening the door for consumers who want some level for electrification in their next SUV.

The new Tiguan weighs around 170 pounds less than the outgoing model, helping both fuel economy and acceleration. EPA-estimated fuel economy is not yet available, but should be higher than the current model’s 25 mpg combined. The weight savings are in large part due to the use of aluminum in the suspension and high-strength hot-formed steel in the body structure.

The interior has premium materials and continues with the clean design Volkswagen is known for. Just like the exterior, no gimmicks here or overwhelming tech. The third generation Tiguan has a standard 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro system and a new central infotainment system featuring a standard 12.9-inch display.

Standard features include wireless charging and app-connect for seamless connectivity, with standard automatic climate control with front seat heat and ventilation. Available are a head-up display, 15-inch infotainment screen, 10- or 30-color ambient lighting depending on trim, and a premium 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

Pricing of the all-new 2025 Tiguan will be announced closer to launch, which is expected in mid-2025.

How About Some Concepts

These concepts were shown at the LAAS, earning “Oohs” and Aahs” from the public.

Acura Performance EV Concept

The world debut of the Acura Performance EV Concept was at the 2024 Monterey Car Week in August, but the LAAS is the first time the general public has seen it. Acura says an all-new SUV, based on the Performance EV Concept, will go into production in late 2025, at the Honda EV Hub in Marysville, Ohio. This is a closer look at what could be the next EV from Acura.

• Chrysler Halcyon EV

It must have been a blast to be on the design team for the all-electric Halcyon Concept. It would never go into production the way it looks now, but that completely misses the point of the vision the Halcyon offers. It is a work of art that displays technological possibilities with a creative interior focusing on occupant comfort and safety. It is designed to operate at a high level of autonomy with built-in AI features and augmented reality. Go here to see more on this beautiful vehicle.

• Hyundai Initium Hydrogen Concept

Hydrogen-fueled electric propulsion for light-duty vehicles offers a big upside, but sales of these cars has been pretty much a California thing, since that’s the only place with refueling stations. Hyundai has had the Nexo FCEV, fuel cell electric vehicle, on the market for a few years with limited sales, but Hyundai’s hydrogen commitment is strong worldwide, especially for heavy trucks. So it was a nice surprise to see the Initium Hydrogen Concept on the stage in Hyundai’s LAAS display. Except for the design, this is what was revealed about this concept.

Pricing and the on-sale date were not announced. (Or even hinted at!)

Kia debuted the P5 WKNDR electric van concept at the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) trade show earlier this month. The LAAS was the first time the general public had the opportunity to see this futuristic van. Technology is the theme with the WKNDR including hydro turbine wheels that rotate separately from the off-road tires to generate electricity. This happens when moving down the road or set-up in a camp. The solar roof adds to off-grid capabilities.

The interior has flexible, modular seats that pull-out, fold, rotate and convert into a dining surface. A pop-out platform can accommodate large items, such as a refrigerator, trash bin or act as a compact cooking area. Sleeping space includes the pop-top roof.

The WKNDR and the Chrysler Halcyon EV were the coolest concepts at the show. Will Kia produce the WKNDR? If the attention it drew is any indication, we can only hope so!

This self-driving, battery-electric is a two-passenger robotaxi. No steering wheel or pedals. Projected start of production is fuzzy, but the end of 2026 is the target. However, since Tesla has never hit any of its announced production or delivery dates, put this one on your watch list for updates and developments. Tesla announced in October that autonomous taxi operations would start with its existing models after an upgrade to its Full Self Driving (Supervised) software.

Lexus EV Sports Car

Sony Vision-S

If you’ve been napping the past couple months, you may have missed a glimpse of the future of electric vehicles. As with all concepts, there is no guarantee they will be built or will look much like the concept once it arrives at your local dealership. Those details don’t diminish the importance of these early previews.

To be included in this overview of what could be on the way the EV had to have physical model, not merely an artist’s wild rendition. And even if you’re taking deposits (we’re looking at you, Henrik), we need to see something three dimensional for drop in here.

In alphabetical order, let’s take a look at what may be in your driveway in a few short years.

Faraday Future has gotten to the “production intent” stage with its FF 91

Faraday Future FF 91 Futurist

The short history of Faraday Future (b.2016) has had as many twists and turns as a Halloween corn maze. With several false starts, premature product and factory announcements, the company finally rolled out some concrete news and a functional model. On February 23, 2022, Faraday Future pulled the sheet off its first-ever production-intent electric vehicle–the FF 91 Futurist EV.

With three electric motors producing 1,050 horsepower (hp) and 1,328 pound-feet (lb.-ft.) of torque, the FF 91 Futurist is claimed to have a 0-60 time of 2.39 seconds and is rated up-to 379 miles of driving range on a fully charged lithium-ion battery. With all-wheel drive, all-wheel steering and rear wheel torque vectoring, the handling should be great. This flagship car for Faraday Future will be produced in limited quantities with production beginning in Hanford, California, in late 2022, so customer deliveries could be sometime in 2023. Pricing has not been released, but expect it to be somewhere between north of $120,000.

Jeep will be jumping into full-EV mode soon

Jeep Electric Vehicle

Stellantis, which sells Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, Fiat, Ram, Maserati and Alfa Romeo in the United States, announced on March 1, 2022 they will be releasing 25 all-new all-electric models across these brands by 2030. The first to make it to dealers will be the 2023 Jeep EV. No other information was provided, including the actual name, but it looks like it will fit right into the Jeep lineup. It’s the logical next step for Jeep, which has been successfully launching plug-in hybrids as it warms up for a full battery electric.

Kia is ready to go big with its next EV–the EV9

Kia EV9

Hot on the heels of the well-received Kia EV6, the Kia EV9 three-row SUV is slated to begin production in second quarter 2023 and American sales sometime in early 2024. Complete details have not been released by Kia, but we do know it is not quite as large as the Kia Telluride. With short front and rear overhangs, the interior should be spacious. All-electric driving range has been announced at 300 miles and should be able to connect to 350kW DC chargers for an 80% charge in about 20 minutes. Expect dual motors and all-wheel drive to be an option, if not standard. Pricing has yet to be announced.

Lexus looks ready to move into EV supercar territory

Lexus Sports Car

Details are sketchy, but if the photos of the Lexus EV sports car are any indication, this thing is going to be awesome. Lexus doesn’t call it a concept, which usually means some iteration of it will make it into production. But they have gone pretty far already for it to be just a design exercise, so start saving now. What we do know: a very fast 0-60 mph in the low 2-second range and 435 miles on a full charge, making it a very compelling EV. Toyota, the parent company of Lexus, is late to the EV market with their first model, the Toyota BZ4X, being released later this year. But don’t let that tardiness fool anyone, as the world’s largest car company has plans to release 30 EVs by 2030. Pricing has not been announced.

An all-American competitor–Mullen

Mullen Five

With a corporate motto of “Imagine What’s Possible”, the Southern California-based Mullen Technologies planted its flag in 2014 with the goal of helping to lower the impact of fossil fuels on the environment. Their first foray into being part of the solution for better air will be the Mullen Five with an estimated 325-mile all-electric driving range. With a 0-60 mph time of 3.2 seconds and a 155 mph top speed, the dual motor, all-wheel drive Mullen Five should offer spirited driving and handling.

This strikingly designed premium compact SUV will be a direct challenger to the Tesla Model Y, Kia EV6 and Polestar 2. They call the interior design “Approachable Luxury” that has customizable seating configurations. This is a truly American vehicle as it is designed, engineered and will be built in the United States at a factory in Tunica, Mississippi. Pricing is set at $55,000 before any federal or state rebates. Deliveries should begin in mid-2024.

Polestar’s glimpse at its future GT sedan

Polestar Precept

The Polestar Precept is a real-world example of a car going from concept to reality. In this case the Precept will become the Polestar 5, with a release date in 2024. As shown in this video, Polestar explains the design process of going from the sketch to a clay model and then a working prototype. The clean, progressive design is engaging, with crisp lines and smooth body panels not burdened with chrome or cladding.

Polestar began as the performance tuning division of Volvo, and then broke away to become a stand-alone electric car company. The first car, the plug-in hybrid sport coupe Polestar 1, was released in 2019; the Polestar 2 compact SUV with a 270-mile electric range came to market in early 2021. Next up will be the Polestar 3 SUV in 2022, the Polestar 4 SUV in 2023, and the Polestar 5 luxury GT sedan in 2024, each with projected 600-mile electric driving ranges. Polestar plans on being a major manufacturer of all-electric luxury vehicles, competing with the likes of Lucid, Porsche and Tesla.

The Polestar 5 will replace the Polestar 1, which was a limited production high performance luxury sports coupe. While no mechanical specifications have been provided, expect the Polestar 5 to be fast, nimble, luxurious, efficient and packed with advanced technology. Pricing and on sale dates have not been announced.

We vote “build it!” Polestar

Polestar 02

If the Polestar Precept concept catches your eye, the Polestar 02 may give you whiplash and make you drool. Both cars come from the vision of Maximilian Missoni, Polestar head of design, who has done a wonderful job of imagining what it will be like to go topless and never hear an engine. Whoosh!

This retractable hard-top convertible sports car is exactly what the world of car design needs, as we suffer through one crossover or SUV after another. Only the Lexus LC 500 will garner as many double-takes as the Polestar 02. “The Polestar 02 is the hero car for our brand,” said Polestar’s CEO Thomas Ingenlath. If this quote is any indication, Clean Fleet Report feels strongly it will come to market. How can the Polestar 02 be the hero car for the brand if it doesn’t become a reality? It can’t, so keep checking back for updates on this exciting car.

Sony’s automotive vision will get a Honda boost

Sony Vision-S 01 and Vision-S 02

At CES 2020, Sony surprised everyone by displaying its concept Vision-S 01 sedan and announcing the creation of Sony Mobility, Inc, a new division that will concentrate on electric vehicle development. Was it possible the renowned consumer audio company was really going to start building cars? Fast forward to CES 2022 where Sony again displayed a concept EV, the Vision-S 02 SUV. It now appeared Sony must be serious, but having never built anything larger than the 100-inch Bravia X92 LED television, how did they think they could build a car or SUV?

Sony cleared the picture on March 4, 2022, by announcing they and Honda have formed “a strategic alliance that aims to create a new era of mobility and mobility services.” This joint-venture will develop electric vehicles together. Honda will build them, and the first Vision-S will be on sale in 2025. No details about the cars have been provided, but this is an exciting development coming from two very proven companies with a rich history of designing and building top quality products.

Something New Lies Underneath

At the 2019 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, both Nissan and Infiniti brands previewed a pair of all-electric concept vehicles that provide a glimpse of the company’s next BEVs and strategies.

Infiniti is going All Electric

Infiniti presented the QX Inspiration concept, a battery electric midsize SUV built on Nissan’s new BEV platform. Infiniti’s president, Christian Meunier, announced that by 2025 Infiniti plans to offer only electric or hybrid vehicles, with the first vehicles due in 2021.

The Infiniti QX Inspiration welcomes you in

The QX Inspiration envisions a long-range dual motor all-wheel drive SUV with high-level autonomous driving capabilities. While Infiniti provided no details, the focus of the QX was to show Infiniti’s new design language for its electric vehicles, with the new face of future Infiniti vehicles without a grill and an aggressive cab-forward stance with a tight greenhouse.

Purposely designed as a BEV, the interior has a fully flat floor, rather than a BEV conversion of an existing internal combustion engine platform. The QX rides on a 112-inch wheelbase with the dual electric motors and the battery packed low in the body for enhanced center of gravity and superior handling. Overall, the concept is 183-inches long. The Infiniti QX Inspiration doors are the center opening “suicide doors,” with a wide pillarless entry and front seats that rotate 30 degrees outwards, making for easier ingress and egress.

With the drivetrain and battery pack below the floor, the spacious interior allows for a lounge-like space and a nod to the day when self-driving technology makes the traditional driver-passenger relationship more intimate and welcoming.

Infiniti has been struggling to find its niche in the market over the last few years. It had high hopes for its recently updated QX30, a CUV based on the Mercedes GLA platform, squarely aimed at American’s thirst for all things CUV/SUV. But the QX30 has been met with a tepid response, and overall Infiniti’s sales are down almost 3 percent year over year. The move to a portfolio of electric and hybrid vehicles is an attempt to grow the marque by appealing to a new generation of millennial buyers that value experience, technology, and uniqueness.

Nissan looks beyond the Leaf

The Nissan Leaf bootstrapped the move to battery electric vehicles almost 10 years ago. Since then the Leaf has sold more than 300,000 copies worldwide. But the design of the current Leaf is dated and conservative compared to its rival BEVs.

Nissan shows what the Leaf may become

At NAIAS, Nissan presented a concept of what the next generation Leaf could be as well as the platform that all Nissan and Infiniti BEVs will be built on in the next couple of years.

The Nissan IMs is the company’s vision of a next-generation sports sedan, building on Nissan’s previous BEV concepts—the Nissan IDs and IMX models. The design is similar to the Infiniti QX Inspiration, but instead of a CUV, it is a high-performance sedan. The cabin features a B-pillar-less interior space with center-opening “suicide doors” and an air suspension that can raise and lower the vehicle depending on its driving mode. The chassis is designed to set the drive motor(s) and battery pack low in the car, contributing to a better center of gravity that will enhance handling.

The interior layout is unique with a “2+1+2” seating architecture, including a pivoting front seats and a rear seat that offers either three across seating or, with the outboard rear seats folded, a “Premier Seat” in the rear center. This layout is a nod to executive or ridesharing travel.

As with all of Nissan’s BEV concepts, the Nissan Intelligent Mobility technology is an integral part of the design. The IMs includes full connectivity and Nissan’s highest levels of safety and autonomous drive systems.

Unlike the QX Inspiration concept, Nissan provided more information on the platform for its next generation BEVs.

A versatile interior that takes advantage of EV & AV

Nissan IMs concept specs

The IMs is built on a 114-inch wheelbase vs. 112-inch for the QX Inspiration (and 106 inches for the current Leaf) and has all-wheel drive with front and rear electric motors delivering 483 horsepower (360 kilowatts) and 590 pounds-feet (800 Newton-meters) of torque. The IMs has a 115-kilowatt-hour battery with a 380-mile estimated range. There was no announcement the battery’s thermal management system.

Based on air dampeners, the electronically controlled suspension can automatically adapt to road conditions and driving mode. Both the Nissan and Infiniti concepts ride on massive 22-inch wheels.

The exterior follows Nissan’s current “Vmotion” design language, but without a grill. Wing cameras replace traditional rear-view mirrors. While most concept vehicles never see the light of day, the IMs seems to be based on substantial engineering work, so much that Nissan has a detailed list of specifications for the sedan.

What the QX Inspiration and the IMs say about future Nissan electric vehicles

These two concepts describe a strikingly similar BEV platform, one that is a thoroughly modern “skateboard” that can be adapted to serve multiple vehicle “Top Hats” including SUVs, sedans, hatchbacks and, most likely, truck, vans and even two-seater sports cars. Considering Nissan’s current ICE vehicle portfolio, any of those could have a BEV version using the platform that is the basis for these two concept vehicles. Just like Volkswagen’s MEB modular electric vehicle platform, it is conceivable that Nissan’s EV platform could do the same with the capability to offer different wheelbase and tracks as well as being able to accommodate several traction battery and motor sizes in two-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations. A modular platform will allow Nissan to leverage its worldwide manufacturing resources to produce different models on the same manufacturing lines just as they currently do with ICE vehicles.

Nissan’s painting an increasingly electrified path that continues to show an emotional element

The next generation Leaf, as well as Infiniti’s first BEV, are due in 2021, which will line up perfectly with this new platform. With the next wave of BEVs set to start arriving that year, this new platform will be critical for Nissan and Infiniti in the coming years.
