Midsize Electric Sedan Flagship for the VW EV Juggernaut

Volkswagen is making another step in its transition to an all-electric line-up with the introduction of its midsize sedan, the 2025 ID7, this week in worldwide simulataneous unveilings. The ID7 continues the company’s numerical progression. The ID3 sedan (a Golf-size replacement available in Europe and China), the ID4 compact SUV (built and sold in all three major EV markets—the U.S., EU and China), the ID5 (a coupe version of the the ID4 SUV only available in Europe), the ID6 (a China only three-row SUV) and the soon-to-arrive in the U.S. ID.Buzz minivan (already on sale in Europe).

The ID7 will be the flagship of the Volkswagen ID brand, slotting in the position once held by the Passat. It has a sleek, streamlined shape that with aerodynamics (a very low 0.23 drag coefficient) that play a role, along with a new electric motor design, that promises to eventually deliver a 435-mile range model. The initial model will have a 300-mile range, according to VW, and be priced at less than $30,000. In the intro, Volkswagen claimed it will be elibible for the $7,500 U.S. tax credit. Europe and China will get the ID7 first later this year. The U.S. will follow next year. All models initially will be built in Emden, Germany.

Powertrain, Driving Range and Charging

No frunk, but one of the most efficient electric motors on the market

The initial model will feature a 77 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery shared with the ID4 and will have an estimated 300-mile range. The ID7 will first come with rear-wheel drive and a newly designed, highly efficient electric motor good for 282 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel drive, a larger 200 kWh battery with approximately 435 miles of range and dual motors will follow the initial model.

The ID7 features a 400-volt architecture capable of charging at a maximum of 170 kilowatts, which should be somewhere eight hours for a full charge on a Level 2 charger, and to 80% in 30 minutes with DC Fast Charging.

The Story Outside

Following the more popular European style, the ID7 will come as a hatchback, offering an expansive trunk, but no front storage (frunk). Based on the same MEB (modular electric drive matrix) as the other ID models, the ID7 emphasizes aerodynamics in its exterior, presenting a coupe-like profile and the lowest overall height of the current lineup of ID models.

With a long 116.8-inch wheelbase and overall of 195.3 inches, 73.3 inches wide.

The Story Inside

Like most ground-up EV designs, the ID7 interior is more spacious than its ICE predecessors. The interior materials are a step up from the ID4 and the rear seat is spacious with excellent leg and head room in spite of the low profile. The lift back feature provides good access to the rear cargo area.

A head-up display takes charge

Standard on the ID7 is an augmented head-up display (HUD), designed to replace dashboard instrumentation so all pertinent information is right in front of the driver’s forward vision. Controls for the HUD are now on the steering wheel.

Seats get massage, and on some models the adaptable Climatronic system will offer the front passengers 14 power adjustments. In automatic mode, the seats will have temperature and moisture sensors to set heat or cooling.

The dash features three screens with driver information. The free-standing 15-inch multi-media infotainment screen in the center of the dash has had its menu navigation and graphic interface redone from previous versions.

Of course, a variety of different mood lighting options will be available for those who like to customize the appearance of the interior.

Safety

The ID7 come with the latest version of IQ.Drive, which includes advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), such as forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking with front pedestrian detection, active side assist blind spot monitor, rear traffic alert, lane assist and adaptive cruise control w/Stop & Go, Travel Assist and Emergency Assist.

Pricing and Availability

Pricing and availability have not been released for the 2025 ID7 in the U.S., but is expected to be on sale in the fall of 2024.

Observations: 2025 Volkswagen ID7

It has taken a while, but Volkswagen has steadily ramped-up its EV model introductions (with the U.S. lagging other markets). The 2025 Volkswagen ID7 sedan gives the company a flagship model designed to square off against the Tesla Model 3 and the Hyundai Ioniq 6. It brings distinctive style, an impressive and efficient new motor with power and range and the promise of new and improved technology throughout.
