John Faulkner is Road Test Editor at Clean Fleet Report. He has more than 30 years’ experience branding, launching and marketing automobiles. He has worked with General Motors (all Divisions), Chrysler (Dodge, Jeep, Eagle), Ford and Lincoln-Mercury, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Toyota on consumer events and sales training programs. His interest in automobiles is broad and deep, beginning as a child riding in the back seat of his parent’s 1950 Studebaker. He is a journalist member of the Motor Press Guild and Western Automotive Journalists.

Steve Schaefer

Steve Schaefer began writing a weekly automotive column in February of 1992. In 2021, when he started working as a staff technical writer at EV startup Rivian, he paused his auto writing. Over those 29 years, Steve tested and reviewed more than 1,200 cars. Now, he’s back.

For many years, Steve tested every vehicle he could get, but in 2017 he began focusing on EVs and hybrids. After completing Climate Reality Leadership Training with Al Gore in August 2018, he moved to writing about only EVs and climate-related topics.

Car passion started at an early age. Steve remembers the joy of riding in his father’s Austin-Healey when he was three-to-five years old. After discovering the August, 1963, issue of Motor Trend, he became entranced with the Detroit annual model change, and began stalking dealers’ back lots to catch the new models as they rolled off the transporter.

Coming from a family that owned three Corvairs, Steve has had multiple adventures with GM vehicles. In 1990, he bought one of the first Saturns, earning him a prominent spot on the cover of the brand’s 1994 product catalogue. In 2017, Steve leased one of the first Chevrolet Bolt EVs.

Steve continued with EVs, driving a tiny Fiat 500e from 2020 through mid-2024. Since May 2024 his daily driver has been a roomy, long-range Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Steve remains at Rivian and strongly supports its mission of electrifying transportation. As part of his commitment, he also tests and reviews EVs and covers the EV industry. All opinions expressed in his writing are his own and do not represent Rivian.

Steve is a founding member of the Western Automotive Journalists. His EV and climate change blog is stevegoesgreen.com.
