Europe Gets the Real-World High-Mileage Little Cars
Fuel efficiency is a big part of driving economically, but the listed output of miles to the gallon in a car’s specs is often an ideal figure. We’ve compiled a list of the Top 10 EU City Cars by MPG based on the experiences of real drivers (MPG is in Imperial gallons; to correct to U.S. gallons multiple by .83–still some pretty healthy numbers)
10. Skoda Citigo 1.0 75 GreenTech
One of the best city cars on the market also gives a great real world MPG of 59.7, much closer to the official figure than most cars come.
- Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 CDTi Ecoflex
This diesel model gives a flat 60 miles to the gallon, making it just as easy to run as it is to buy and drive.
- Renault Clio 1.5 dCi 90
This Clio falls short of its lofty official figure of 78.5 MPG, but 60.1 is still an impressive and economical figure.
- Fiat Panda 1.3 Multijet
Famously spacious and reliable, the Panda is also a great option for the economic driver with a flat 61 MPG.
- Ford Fiesta 1.6 TDCi ECOnetic
One of the most popular small cars on the market is also one of the best for fuel economy with 62.5 MPG.
- Suzuki Celero 1.0 Dualjet
A great city car, cheap to pick up and to run too, thanks to its real world MPG of 62.9.
- DS 3 1.6 e-HDi 115 Airdream
It’s no surprise to see an entry from French luxury manufacturer DS with a respectable MPG of 63 flat.
- Volkswagen up! 1.0 75
At 63.5 MPG, this entry actually outstrips manufacturer projections by more than two miles per gallon and, given the shortfall you usually see, that alone is a feat. The car’s also one of the most efficient in its class.
-
Peugeot 208 1.6 BlueHDi 75
Sixy-four MPG is pretty shy of the official MPG of 94.2, but still quite an impressive performance.
- Citroën C3 1.4 e-HDi 70 Airdream
With a real world MPG of 70.3, the C3 blows the competition out of the water when it comes to fuel economy. The best way to get a Citroën is through their own Robins and Day dealerships.
