Package Delivery Van Due in 2022
While new electric cars and SUVs are proliferating, the commercial vehicle market isn’t being left out. Encouraged by planned zero-emission zones and tightening engine regulations as well as competition moving the same direction, Ford announced this week that it will be bringing an all-electric version of its popular Ford Transit van to market for the 2022 model year.
Few details and no photos were offered with the announcement, but the electric Transit will be built in the U.S. and offered in the U.S. and Canada. It will be offered in cargo van, cutaway, chassis cab, three roof heights and three body lengths.
Ford did not say whether its partnership with Rivian contributed to this new model, which will be Ford’s third electric offering, joining the Mustang Mach-E and F-150. The company said it expects electric vehicles to grow to eight percent of the commercial industry in the U.S. by 2025.
Along with an electric powertrain, the Ford Transit will be designed for connected mobile businesses with high-speed electrical architectures and cloud-based data services built into the vehicle. Driver-assist technologies like pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, post-collision braking, lane-keeping and auto high-beam headlights will also be part of the package.
The electric Ford Transit will join Mercedes’ eSprinter, Chanje’s electric vans, Workhorse and the electric delivery vans that Rivian will be building for Amazon among others in this growing segment.
