News: Genesis Reveals GV60 Crossover EV

Hyundai-Kia Expands Its Electric Portfolio

Genesis GV60 EV
Going for a coupe-like look

Another upscale electric crossover’s coming to town. We’ve been waiting and wondering how Genesis, Hyundai’s upscale brand, would respond to the growing electrification of its segment. The first answer offered this week is the Genesis GV60, a compact crossover that rounds out the brand’s SUV lineup. It will land sometime next year, joining its larger, gas-powered siblings—the GV70 and GV80.

Genesis teased the new model’s arrival by releasing interior and exterior photos, but was light on key details like the powertrain. Since the GV60 will be based on Hyundai’s electric global modular platform (E-GMP), which is will share with the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, it’s probably safe to assume similar stats. If so, that means potentially a RWD model with a 168 kilowatt (kW) electric motor, a 50 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery and an approximate 300-mile range, and a AWD model with two motors cranking out the equivalent of 576 horsepower, a 77.4 kWh battery and about 10 percent less range than the RWD version.

Like the other new Hyundai EVs, the SUV will feature fast charging capability. Mated to the right charger, it can add 60 miles of range in five minutes or go from 10 percent to 80 percent charge in under 18 minutes.

Design Theme

Following a growing trend, Genesis has named its design theme, so the GV60 is supposed to be an expression of “Athletic Elegance,” implying sportiness along with entry-level luxury. From the side view, it edges toward a coupe-like silhouette. The GV60’s grille is scaled to be proportionately smaller than its gas siblings’ and is dropped lower to help steer air to cool the batteries.

The GV60 also will feature Genesis’ first “clamshell hood,” so the hood and fenders will be a single unit. Door handles will pop out to greet the owner on approach.

Inside, the GV60 goes for a minimalist approach with a large, curved display that incorporates drive information as well as infotainment, navigation and climate controls. The highlight feature is the Genesis Crystal Sphere, a shift-by-wire system that gives driver feedback on the car’s status. It also provides ambient lighting. The Sphere resides on the floating console.
