3 Pieces of Good News for EVs in 2023

The Outlook Brightens

EVs offer considerable environmental promise, and their performance now rivals many ICE vehicles. However, they have yet to dominate the roadways.

Fortunately, EV enthusiasts have a friend in the Biden Administration—and that’s not the only good news we have to look forward for the rest of 2023.

Those in the market for EVs have more choices than ever. Today’s EVs can travel farther on a single charge and manufacturers are working hard even more efficient new models. Of course, this new mode of transportation requires the proper infrastructure, but improvements are underway in that arena.

So, what do consumers have to look forward to?

More models coming

1. You’ll Have More Models and Styles to Choose From

Although many EVs are on the market today, only some well-known manufacturers have entered the game in the United States. For example, Toyota only offers one full-electric model right now—the BZ4X SUV. However, more are coming, including 10 new EVs by 2026.

Honda is another famous manufacturer that currently offers no EVs in the U.S. However, they are readying factories in Ohio for a model to be produced in collaboration with GM. They’re also working with Sony on a jointly designed model that will show up soon. Other manufacturers like GM that already have several models in their EV lineup plan to add more. GM’s Chevrolet Division will be dropped an electric Silverado pickup and two SUVs–the Equinox and Blazer.

2. Electric Isn’t Just for Cars Anymore

Once upon a time, you had two basic choices of EV—a car or a bike. However, manufacturers have expanded their product lines and some of the first models are hitting the consumer marketplace. For example, some schools have begun to convert to electric buses, which help combat climate change. The U.S. market alone is slated to reach $1.95 billion by 2024.

Other choices of EV include the following:

  • Pickup trucks: There are many more than Rivian on the market today. Many of today’s electric trucks—like the F-150 Lightning—have comparable towing capacities to traditional pickups.
  • Semis: Tesla’s dropped a few of its sleek 500-mile big trucks. Volvo and Freightliner are already in production with hundreds of trucks delivered and on the road.
  • Dump trucks: EVs are now into heavy equipment. Brands like CAT, Komatsu and Hitachi now have shown electric dump trucks and other equipment. Volvo Construction and Case Construction recently premiered an electric backhoe.
  • RVs: Winnebago and Thor are among the manufacturers looking to put out fully electric recreational vehicles that will make the local KOA much quieter and cleaner.
  • Electric motorcycles: Although not quite as new as some others on this list, there are now more electric motorcycles to choose from for those with a need for speed beyond pedal assist, including Zero Motorcycles and Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire.

3. There Will Be More Places to Charge Your Ride

What’s the number one objection consumers have regarding EVs? Where to charge! Finding a charging station does require extra road trip planning if you want to go the distance.

However, the Biden Administration recently encouraged Congress to pass a bill to allocate $7.5 billion to install new charging stations, which they approved. However, the nation still lags behind its rivals. China currently has 1.2 million charging points and Europe has 400,000—the U.S. has a mere 140,000.

Look for improvements to much of the existing infrastructure, which was built by and supports only Teslas–that is, until Ford and GM signed deals to open up the Tesla Supercharging network to their cars. New installations will help owners of the other 91 EV brands refill their power.

It’s a Great Time for EVs

There’s a lot of good news for EVs on the horizon in 2023. Consumers will have more products to choose from, whether they want a classic car or something a little different.

They’ll also have more places to charge their new rides, significantly increasing their confidence and enjoyment on the road.
