Redesigned Top Selling Sedan Goes All Hybrid
Toyota made a splash at the 116th Los Angeles Auto Show this week with the debut of the redesigned, ninth generation 2025 Camry, which will now only be offered as a hybrid. Clean Fleet Report will write a detailed review after having the chance to drive the 2025 Camry, sometime in early 2024, but until then, this what we know.
Camry Hybrid
The current Camry offers the option of either a four- or six cylinder gasoline engine or a gasoline-electric hybrid. Beginning with the 2025 Camry, available in LE, SE and XLE trims, it will be exclusively powered by the fifth generation of the Toyota Hybrid System which combines a 2.5-liter gasoline engine and twin electric motors. The total horsepower (hp) output for the front-wheel drive Camry is 225 hp with 232 hp for the all-wheel drive model.
To optimize the driving experience, the Camry has an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission with driver selectable drive modes of Normal, Eco and Sport. Toyota has made it easy to understand when to use each mode, as Eco is for maximizing fuel and battery range and is best used on the open highway; Normal is for all-around in-town driving; while Sport will improve and sharpen the feel when tromping on the accelerator pedal.
The electronic on-demand AWD employs front and rear-mounted electric motors for precise on-demand front-rear torque distribution in accordance with driving conditions and a dedicated rear-mounted electric motor to power the rear wheels. Depending on road and driving conditions, the system can seamlessly distribute needed power when in slippery or sloppy conditions.
Sleeker Exterior Design
The 2025 Camry utilizes Toyota’s hammerhead front end design with slim, LED head and daytime running lights placed on the outer edges of the chiseled body. The long hood meets the windshield at laidback A-pillars that lead to a sweeping roof with a small lip spoiler on the trunk. The LED tail lights wrap from the fender to the rear. Toyota uses words like “distinctive, sleeker, athletic, and fresh and clean” to describe the new look.
Completing the look are either 18-inch multi-spoke black-finished alloy wheels on the LE and SE, or 19-inch multi-spoke black and gray alloy wheels on the XSE. Camry models will have exterior color choices of Ice Cap, Wind Chill Pearl, Celestial Silver Metallic, Underground, Midnight Black Metallic, Supersonic Red and Reservoir Blue. The XSE trim adds an available two-tone look with Ocean Gem, Wind Chill Pearl, Heavy Metal and Supersonic Red paired with a Midnight Black Metallic roof.
Open-Concept Interior
The Camry power front seats have been redesigned with more length, increased padding in the seat cushions while the headrests were softened and moved further back for improved ride comfort. The LE and SE seats are covered in synthetic fabric SofTex that is designed for wear, easy cleaning and resisting spills, while the XSE gets leather and microfiber-trimmed seats.
The LE has an 8-inch touchscreen display while the XLE and XSE get a 12.3-inch color touchscreen that houses navigation, SiriusXM/AM/FM HD radio with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity. Other available features include a 10-inch head-up display, 9-speaker JBL premium audio system, Qi wireless phone charger, multiple USB-A and C ports front and rear, front seat back pockets and a digital key.
Pricing and Availability
Pricing has not been released for the 2025 Camry, but will be just before it is scheduled to be in dealers in spring 2024.
Observations: 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid
The next generation 2025 Camry joins the growing list of Toyota models that are only offered with some sort of electrification—now emcompassing hybrid, plug-in hybrid, hydrogen fuel cell electric, or battery-electric models. Toyota continues its quest to have all its vehicles come with some level of electrification, even the trucks.
If our experience driving the Camry in the past few years (see below) is any indication, the 2025 Camry will be a very nice and efficient car.
