Jaguar Concept Zero Has Getaway Role
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left the royal wedding in style. They jumped into a beautifully restored pale blue 1968 Jaguar E-Type and silently pulled away. Silent because they were driving the Jaguar Concept Zero, a piece of history that looks back and forward at the same time.
Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works aims to take the looks, handling and performance of this Sixties icon and updates it with a state-of-the-art electric powertrain. The new electric components fit in the same space as the E-Type’s base six-cylinder engine. When we say it preserves the original Jag’s performance, we actually understated the facts in classic British fashion. The front-rear balance is the same, but the redone Jag is 80 kilograms (175 pounds) lighter and a second faster from 0-to-60 mph.
Power to Back Up the Looks
The Jaguar Concept Zero’s electric powertrain develops 220 kilowatts of power. The 40 kWh lithium-ion battery pack sits under the hood along with the electric motors. It has a real world range of about 170 miles, aided by light weight and excellent aerodynamics.
Inside, along with classic English leather, the E-Type received some modern touches, such as a carbon fiber dash and a modern touchscreen. The original shifter has been replaced by a modern dial. Jaguar said this hand-built model cost a little less than $500,000 to put together.
Of course, Jaguar is committed to electric drive in its mass-produced vehicles, led by the recently introduced I-Pace SUV. It doesn’t have the style of the E-Type, but it is more affordable.
