The Surprising Link Between Tire Alignment, Balance and Maximum EV Range

| | , , ,

When you think about maximizing EV range, tires probably aren’t the first thing you think about. However, the way they meet the road can affect how much energy your vehicle needs to keep moving.

Here’s how tire alignment and balance can influence efficiency, tire wear and the range you get from each charge.

Misalignment Can Steal EV Range

Tire alignment determines how the tires sit and point in relation to the road. When the geometry is off, a tire may be forced to scrub against the road rather than roll cleanly in the direction of travel. That raises rolling resistance, meaning the motor has to use more energy to keep your car going.

Rolling resistance already has an outsized role in EV efficiency. It has roughly three times the effect on range in an EV compared with a conventional combustion-powered vehicle. EVs convert a much larger share of their stored energy into motion, so losses at the tires can be a more noticeable part of the overall energy equation.

Misalignment can gradually take a toll on your tires. A car that drifts sideways, a steering wheel that refuses to sit straight or tread that disappears unevenly can all point to an issue with the wheel angles. Left unchecked, those problems can increase friction on the road and make each trip slightly less efficient. Regular alignment checks and tire rotations can help extend their useful life and preserve mileage, meaning you may get more distance before reaching for the charger.

Wheel Balance Has an Energy Connection, Too

Balancing deals with weight distribution within the wheel and tire assembly. When that distribution is uneven, you can feel vibrations through the steering wheel, floor or seat. Continued imbalance can contribute to irregular tire wear and put additional stress on suspension components.

The connection to range develops through that wear. A balance problem doesn’t directly consume battery power in the same way rolling resistance does. However, vibration and uneven wear can affect the condition of the tires that transfer the motor’s energy to the road.

EV Tires Have a Bigger Job to Do

In addition to alignment and balance, the tires themselves can affect how much energy your EV needs to travel. Tire compound, tread pattern, wear, inflation pressure and temperature all influence rolling resistance. Even being a few psi below the recommended pressure can increase resistance and reduce efficiency.

EVs also place unusual demands on tires because electric motors deliver instant torque. That immediate burst of power can cause slight wheel slip during acceleration and contribute to faster tire wear. EV-specific tires are therefore designed to balance grip, durability and efficiency while handling the demands of a heavier vehicle.

Keeping your tires properly inflated and choosing the correct specification for your EV can help you avoid throwing away range through preventable tire losses.

Keep the Energy on the Road

Your battery may hold the electricity, but your tires determine how efficiently some of that energy gets turned into movement. Alignment keeps the wheels pointing where they should, balance keeps them spinning smoothly and the right tires help limit energy losses as they roll. Keeping all three in good shape can help you get closer to the range your EV was built to deliver.
