The Importance of This SUV to Volvo Can’t Be Overstated

Automotive journalists and influencers were invited to Culver City, California, this week for an up-close look at the all-new 2027 Volvo EX60 EV. With production beginning soon and dealer deliveries sometime in June, sales success for the EX60 is vital for Volvo.

Volvo’s volume mover

The 2027 Volvo EX60 is a two-row, five-passenger midsize all-electric SUV. The attractive, modern and contemporary look is not flashy (a historical trait from Volvo) meaning it will have few of any detractors regarding its exterior design. The interior is clean and open with all the tech and audio that has come to be expected on premium cars. It will come in two iterations—the EX60 and EX60 Cross Country, the latter of which will come next year with higher ground clearance and a standard adaptive air suspension.

Specifications

The EX60 comes either with rear-wheel (RWD) or all-wheel (AWD) drive powered with the choice of three battery sizes.

Airy, Modern, Tech-Laden Interior

Sound & simplcity

The minimalist EX60 interior is spacious with the electrochromic glass roof adding an extra sense of airiness. The seats come in four color options: Cardamom (mid-tone brown), Charcoal (deep black) and Dawn (grey-beige), each available in three materials. Rye (neutral) is offered in a wool blend. Each is complemented with wood trim and carpeting.

The 40:20:40-split rear seat is heated, power-reclines and has an available industry-first built-in child booster seat, which is also heated. The kiddies will love it!

The 15-inch horizontal infotainment screen uses OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology with Google Gemini AI, Google Play and Google Maps. The standard Bose Premium sound system has 21 speakers and 1,200 watts with a subwoofer and 3D sound processing.

Stepping-up to the Bowers & Wilkens High-Fidelity system has 28 speakers and 1,820 watts with Dolby Atmos 3D audio sound.

The 11.4-inch high-resolution driver display is located close to the windshield to reduce eye and head movement. There is no head-up display.

Smooth Exterior

There are very few sharp edges on the EX60 exterior since slipping through the air is a priority. Even the door handles are uniquely shaped to cut through the air. The front is smooth with Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights that help avoid blinding oncoming cars. There are puddle lights and LED rear vertical lights with each end having welcome and farewell sequences.

There are two design themes, Bright and Dark, each continuing the restraint of Scandinavian design. There are four aluminum wheel designs with open spokes that were designed to maximize aerodynamics to reduce drag. The eight color choices are Crystal White, Onyx Black, Denim Blue, Sand Dune, Aurora Silver, Heather Bronze, Vapor Grey and, like the car featured for the media, Forest Lake.

Pricing

Pricing was announced as being “well-equipped around $60,000.” Production begins in Gothenburg, Sweden, in the late-April with the first demo EX60 models being available for test drives at U.S. dealers in June.

A key EV for Volvo

Volvo told us “The EX60 EV is the most significant new vehicle from Volvo in recent years and its sales success is of importance to the company. We expect EX60 EV to be a significant volume driver for the brand (and the) EX60 will enter the biggest BEV segment and expand our market footprint significantly.”

The midsize all-electric luxury SUV segment includes the BMW iX, Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, Cadillac Lyriq, Genesis GV70, Lexus RZ, Lucid Gravity, Tesla Model X and the Audi Q6 E-Tron. So how will it compare?

When Clean Fleet Report gets behind the wheel sometime later this year we will cover the driving attributes, fit-and-finish, technology and real-world all-electric driving range.
